Ages 0-10 Years: Please See Your Pediatrician

Our family medicine practice focuses on adolescent and adult care. For children ages 0-10 years, we recommend establishing care with a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in infant and childhood development, growth monitoring, and the comprehensive vaccination schedule required during these critical years.
What We Can Help With:
  • Acute Illness Care: While we recommend pediatric care for routine wellness visits, we are available to see children ages 0-10 for acute conditions such as fever, ear infections, strep throat, minor injuries, rashes, coughs, colds, flu symptoms, and other urgent medical concerns when your pediatrician is unavailable.
  • Same-Day Sick Visits: If your child has an acute illness and needs immediate attention, our practice can provide evaluation and treatment to help your child feel better quickly.
  • After-Hours Care: When your pediatrician's office is closed and your child needs medical attention for non-emergency conditions, we're here to help bridge that gap during our open hours.
  • Coordination with Your Pediatrician: After any acute visit, we'll communicate with your child's regular pediatrician to ensure continuity of care and proper follow-up.

Ages 10-12 Years

As your child transitions from childhood to adolescence, annual wellness visits become increasingly important. These pre-teen years involve significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Our family medicine practice provides comprehensive care for children ages 10 and up, focusing on health maintenance, early puberty education, and establishing healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
What to Expect:
  • Physical Examination: A complete head-to-toe physical exam including measurement of height, weight, and calculation of body mass index (BMI) to track growth patterns. We'll check vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate to establish baseline values.
  • Growth Assessment: Tracking your child's growth on standardized growth charts to ensure they're developing appropriately. Many children experience growth spurts during these years, and we'll discuss what to expect.
  • Vision and Hearing Screening: Comprehensive vision testing to detect refractive errors that could affect school performance. Hearing screening ensures no issues that might impact learning or social development.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Testing: Your healthcare provider may recommend testing based on your age, sexual activity, the presence of symptoms or if you have an increased level of risk.
  • Scoliosis Screening: Visual examination of the spine to check for curvature (scoliosis), which commonly develops during pre-adolescent growth spurts. Early detection allows for monitoring and intervention if needed.
  • Puberty Discussion: Age-appropriate education about the physical and emotional changes of puberty. For girls, discussion of breast development and menstruation. For boys, discussion of voice changes, growth spurts, and body development.
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring: Annual blood pressure checks are important as hypertension can begin in childhood, especially in children who are overweight.
  • Mental Health Screening: Assessment for signs of anxiety, depression, or behavioral concerns. The pre-teen years can be emotionally challenging as children navigate increased academic pressure and social dynamics.
Important Note About Vaccinations:
  • Our practice does not provide routine vaccinations but can refer. We recommend continuing with your child's pediatrician for all vaccination needs, including the Tdap booster, HPV vaccine series, and meningococcal vaccine typically given around age 11-12.
  • We can provide documentation of needed vaccines and coordinate with your pediatrician to ensure your child stays up to date on their immunization schedule.

Ages 13-15 Years

The teenage years are a time of rapid physical, emotional, and social development. Annual wellness visits during ages 13-15 focus on supporting healthy development, screening for health risks, and providing education about important health topics. We create a comfortable, confidential environment where teens can discuss their health concerns openly and honestly.
What to Expect:
  • Comprehensive Physical Exam: Full physical examination including height, weight, BMI calculation, blood pressure, heart and lung examination, and assessment of overall health status.
  • Confidential Discussion Time: Part of the visit will be conducted privately with your teen (with parent/guardian in the waiting room) to encourage open conversation about sensitive topics including mental health, relationships, substance use, and sexual health.
  • Puberty and Development: Discussion of physical changes, body image concerns, skin care for acne prevention, and what's considered normal development. Assessment of sexual maturation using Tanner staging when appropriate.
  • Mental Health Assessment: Screening for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm behaviors, and suicidal ideation. The teen years carry increased risk for mental health challenges, and early identification is crucial.
  • Substance Use Screening: Confidential discussion about exposure to or experimentation with tobacco, vaping, alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Education about risks and decision-making strategies.
  • Scoliosis Monitoring: Continued monitoring for spinal curvature if concerns were identified at earlier visits.
  • Sexual Health Education: Age-appropriate discussion about healthy relationships, consent, sexually transmitted infection prevention, and contraception. For sexually active teens, guidance on protection and risk reduction.
Laboratory Screening (if indicated):
  • Blood Pressure: Measured at every visit to screen for hypertension.
  • Cholesterol Screening: Recommended if there's a family history of high cholesterol or heart disease, or if the teen is overweight or obese.
  • Anemia Screening: Particularly important for teenage girls after menstruation begins.
  • Diabetes Screening: Blood glucose testing if overweight/obese or other risk factors are present.
  • STI Screening: For sexually active teens, screening for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and other infections based on risk factors and sexual history.
  • Scoliosis Monitoring: Continued monitoring for spinal curvature if concerns were identified at earlier visits.
  • Comprehensive Physical Exam: Full physical examination including height, weight, BMI calculation, blood pressure, heart and lung examination, and assessment of overall health status.
Important Note About Vaccinations:
  • Our practice does not provide routine vaccinations but can refer. Please see your pediatrician or local health department for vaccines including meningococcal boosters (required for college), HPV vaccine series completion, and any catch-up vaccines needed for college admission or employment.

Late Teens (Ages 16-19)

The late teen years mark the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Wellness visits during this time focus on preparing teens for independence, addressing high-risk behaviors, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices as they approach adulthood. We provide comprehensive, confidential care that respects the growing autonomy of older teens while maintaining appropriate parental involvement.
What to Expect:
  • Complete Physical Examination: Thorough physical exam including vital signs, height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, heart, lungs, abdomen, and examination of all body systems to ensure optimal health.
  • Private Consultation: Most of the visit will be conducted confidentially with your teen to facilitate honest discussion about personal health concerns, relationships, sexual health, mental health, and risk behaviors.
  • Mental Health Evaluation: Comprehensive screening for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. College-bound teens may experience increased stress about their future. Working teens face different pressures. We address each teen's unique circumstances.
  • Sexual Health and Reproductive Care: Frank, non-judgmental discussion about sexual activity, contraception options, STI prevention, healthy relationships, and consent. For sexually active teens, guidance on protection and annual STI screening recommendations.
  • Substance Use Assessment: Confidential screening for tobacco, vaping, alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use. Discussion of risks, legal consequences, and impact on brain development, academics, and future opportunities.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Assessment: Discussion of family history of heart disease, checking blood pressure and cholesterol if risk factors are present.
  • Immunization Review: Verification that all required vaccines are up to date before college or entry into the workforce (Most colleges require proof of meningococcal vaccine and other immunizations).
Laboratory Screening (if indicated):
  • Blood Pressure: Checked at every visit; hypertension screening is recommended starting at age 18.
  • Lipid Panel: Cholesterol screening for those with family history of premature cardiovascular disease or those with risk factors like obesity, diabetes, or smoking.
  • Diabetes Screening: Blood glucose or hemoglobin A1C testing for those who are overweight or have other diabetes risk factors.
  • Anemia Screening: Particularly important for young women with heavy menstrual periods.
  • STI Testing: Recommended annually for sexually active teens - testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis based on risk factors and sexual history.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening: Pap smear screening begins at age 21 for women, regardless of sexual activity status.
  • HIV Screening: Recommended at least once for all individuals between ages 15-18, with more frequent screening for high-risk individuals.
Preventive Counseling:
  • Suicide Prevention: Identifying warning signs, providing crisis resources, ensuring teens know how to access help.
Important Note About Vaccinations:
  • Our practice does not provide routine vaccinations but can refer. Please see your pediatrician or local health department for vaccines including meningococcal boosters (required for college), HPV vaccine series completion, and any catch-up vaccines needed for college admission or employment.
  • We can review your immunization record and provide documentation of needed vaccines for school or work requirements.

FAQs

When should I schedule well child exams?

Well child visits are recommended at birth, 1 month, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30 months, and then annually through adolescence. Your provider will help customize the schedule for your child’s developmental needs.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring your child’s vaccination record, any medical updates, a list of current medications, and questions or concerns about growth, development, or behavior.

What’s included in a typical exam?

A well child exam includes a full physical assessment, growth measurements, developmental screening, vision and hearing checks, and age-appropriate counseling for you and your child. We review your child’s medical history and can provide guidance on recommended vaccinations, but vaccines are not administered during the visit.

Does insurance cover well child visits?

Yes, most insurance plans fully cover routine well child exams as part of preventive healthcare. Our team can help verify your coverage and explain any out-of-pocket costs.

For a child under 10, should I schedule a well-child exam with a pediatrician or a family medicine doctor?

You can schedule a well-child exam with either a pediatrician or a family medicine doctor. Pediatricians specialize exclusively in children’s health, and they may be a better choice if your child has a disability or complex medical needs. Family medicine doctors are trained to care for patients of all ages, including children, and can provide routine well-child care. Choose the provider that feels most comfortable and convenient for your family—both are qualified for kids under 10, but pediatricians may offer extra expertise for children with special healthcare needs.
